Research and Development

The Directorate of Research and Development (DRD) plays a pivotal role in advancing the University of Zambia's research agenda, as the institution implements its Strategic Plan (2023-2027) and strengthens its research management capabilities through the adoption of an Integrated Research Information Management System (IRIMS). The Directorate’s mission is to foster a culture of research excellence, ensuring high-quality outputs that contribute to the University's academic reputation, societal impact, and long-term development.

To further strengthen research management capabilities, the University of Zambia is implementing an Integrated Research Information Management System (IRIMS). This system will:

  • Provide a centralized platform for managing research projects, grants, and collaborations;
  • Enhance research visibility and dissemination through a searchable research database;
  • Streamline research administration and reporting processes;
  • Support research collaboration and networking among academics and external partners; and
  • Inform strategic decision-making through data-driven insights on research performance and impact;

By leveraging IRIMS, the Directorate aims to increase research efficiency, productivity, visibility and impact, ultimately solidifying the University of Zambia's position as a research leader in the region.

DRD is responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing the University-wide research strategy;
  • Overseeing all research activities within the University;
  • Managing research budgets and allocating resources efficiently;
  • Fostering a culture of research excellence and supporting emerging research areas;
  • Mentoring staff and students in research methodologies and project management;
  • Promoting and facilitating the publication and dissemination of research findings;
  • Creating awareness on policies, strategies, guidelines, and procedures related to research entities;
  • Coordinating the collection, curation, and dissemination of information related to funding opportunities, potential partnerships, and information platforms for inter- and multidisciplinary research;
  • Coordinating the Senate Board of Research; and
  • Coordinating the Graduate Studies activities as the Graduate Studies Board.

DRD’s objectives are to:

  • Enhance the University's research environment and academic reputation;
  • Strengthen academic research programs and ensure alignment with national, regional and international standards;
  • Support the development of research capabilities among staff and students;
  • Contribute to the University's societal impact and long-term development; and
  • Promote excellence in research among the University of Zambia research entities through capacity building, research leadership training, and skills development.
