Guidance and Counselling

The Centre is headed by the Senior Counsellor. The office provides specialist services mainly to students and members of staff and operates drop-in-services for professional counselling, guidance, internship and placement, advisory information giving, career development and psycho-social support. It coordinates programmes in student orientation, social skills training, interpersonal relations, HIV / AIDS awareness and work-study/vocational employment. Students desiring to utilise these services may contact the centre on an individual or group basis and interaction is professional and confidential.

Our Role

The Centre is responsible for Professional and Guidance Counselling for students as well as University Staff and their families. However, members of the general public are also attended to at a nominal fee.

Counselling Services

Offering professional counselling services to students, staff members and their families as per need in a confidential manner, Interventions offered include:

  1. Personal Counselling
    • Supportive and problem-solving help for emotional difficulties
    • Inter- and intrapersonal communication problems or stressful life situations
    • Peer pressure
    • Anger Management
    • Transition or adjustment experiences
    • Relationships
    • Family issues
    • Grief /bereavement counselling
    • Guilty feelings
    • Substance abuse (Alcohol, Drug abuse, etc)
  2. Academic Counselling:
    • Change of quota
    • Information on academic withdrawal, Leave of absence from academic study
    • Examination anxiety (Panic mode, worry, etc)
    • Lack of concentration in studies
  3. Life skills:
    • Communication skills
    • Assertiveness training
    • Self awareness
    • Room conflict and friendship issues
    • Management of suicidal ideations
    • Stress and depression management (psychological)
  4. Financial Counselling
    • Prudent use of personal funds to students
    • Banking concerns
  5. Career/Vocational Guidance goals
    • Career planning and choices
    • Employment search
    • Job interview tips
    • Lack of occupational goals
  6. Referrals and consultation:
    • These are done under strict confidentiality it to higher levels for better management, including shared confidentiality as per ZCC ethical code of conduct.
  7. Health Counselling is done at UNZA Clinic
    • HIV/AIDS
    • Family planning
    • Sexual and Reproductive Health
    • Drug and Alcohol abuse
    • Sexual Harassment
  8. Group Counselling
    • Done to two or more people with similar concerns to address emotional, psychological, and behavioural development.
  9. Crisis Counselling/Emergencies.
    • Services done to students experiencing emotional distress, eg Suicide attempt, Rape, Violence,
      Physical assault etc.

COUNSELLING CENTRE WELLNESS GARDENS

Introduction:

The purpose of the garden is to create a vibrant and inclusive green space that promotes recreation, relaxation, and community engagement, while also showcasing innovative sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. The Garden is located opposite the Graduate School of Business and School of Agricultural Science offices.

  1. Provide a peaceful and inspiring space for students, staff, and the community
  2. Encourage physical activity, mental relaxation, and overall well-being through access to green space and recreational activities.
  3. Create a welcoming space for social interaction, community events, and activities that promote social cohesion.
  4. Develop a counselling and wellness Centre to support students' mental health and Personal development

Counselling Concerns

Counselling is the best alternative for many Psychosocial and Academic concerns. “Talking through” concerns in a RELAXED and CONFIDENTIAL ATMOSPHERE helps you CLARIFY your problems and learn how to deal with them.

The Counselling Centre is headed by the Senior Counsellor and is assisted by five Counsellors and other staff comprising of a Secretary, a Stenographer, and an Administrative Officer.
