About the Department

The University of Zambia Horticulture section is an entity within the Student Affairs Unit, whose mandate is to promote and maintain an eco-friendly UNZA environment that is clean and green. Previously, the University of Zambia had a full-fledged Horticulture section team under the Vice-Chancellor’s Department, and it was supervised by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor. The section existed as Horticulture Centre to provide ornamental plants and maintain all University of Zambia premises and establishments, which were just being constructed. The Horticulture Department is responsible for the maintenance of environmentally clean campus surroundings, parks, and amenity horticulture. Its core activities are to improve the general outlook of the surroundings at Marshlands, INESOR, Principal Officers’ Residences, Great East Road Campus, and Ridgway Campus, through weeding and landscaping, planting flowers and grass, slashing grass, cutting overgrown shrubs and trees, regular watering and maintenance of lawns. The Horticulture Officer heads the department that comprises of permanently employed staff and casual workers..

Headed by the Horticulture manager, the Horticulture Department is responsible for maintaining and cleaning of UNZA grounds, general sanitation, clearing of drainages, slashing and mowing of surroundings, litter picking and waste disposal, tree cutting, hedge trimming, Nursery and Nursery management, and the promotion of a general green environment.
