This Hub is mandated to provide a formalized coordination structure and system for research and innovation at the University of Zambia. This involves ensuring that all research and innovation activities are aligned with the University's mission, strategic goals, and national development priorities.

To achieve this, the Hub fosters a culture of excellence, collaboration, and impact in research and innovation. It promotes multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research collaborations across various faculties and departments, and develops and implements strategies for innovation, technology transfer, and commercialization.

Ultimately, the Research and Innovation Hub aims to enhance the University's research profile and reputation, both nationally and internationally. By driving socio-economic development in Zambia and beyond through research and innovation, the Hub plays a critical role in advancing the University's mission and contributing to the betterment of society. The Research and Innovation Hub is envisioned as a leading research and innovation ecosystem in Zambia and the region, recognized for its excellence in research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and its impact on socio-economic development.

The University of Zambia established the Directorate of Research and Graduate Studies (DRGS) in 1994 with the mandate to coordinate the university's research and postgraduate activities. The Directorate then changed its name to Research and Innovation Hub.
