Research and Development
The School of Mines research activities are underpinned by the objective of solving human development problems in our country and the world at large.
Current research projects are:
- The Project of Riskased participatory WASH planning and citizenata WASH statistics for African perirban settlements. 3.8 Million USD.
- Dr Tambo Research Chair in Water Conservation Fund. Project value 17 Million ZAR.
- Tipping Point Explained by Climate Change. Project value 316,837 Euros.
- Transformative Environmental Monitoring to Boost Observations in Africa. Project value 154,744 Euros.
- Agile Exploration and Geodelling for European Critical Raw Materials. Project value 114,010 Euros.
- Wetland Assessment and Monitoring Platform for Transboundary River Basins in Southern Africa. Project value 24,000 Euros.
- Enhancement of the electric vehicle battery manufacturing value chain through technological innovation by producing electric vehicle battery precursors via modification of existing technologies to help Zambia enter the lithium electric vehicle battery manufacturing industry. Project value 784,989 ZMW.
- Virtual regional pole of engineering geotechnical characterization of Shimabala regional soils. Project value 93,000 Euros.
The school continues to look for partners in research collaboration in the following areas:
- Critical minerals value chain optimisation.
- Development of new equipment for small scale mining
- Resource recovery from tailing dumps
- Advanced exploration technologies
- Water resource management
Department Projects and Publications
Geology - IWRM
- The SATREPS Project team from Japan visited the Department during which areas of collaboration in research were agreed upon, namely: groundwater, environmental remediation and mineral beneficiation.
- Development of a water quality and quantity database for the Upper Zambezi (funded by SASSCAL) Project
- Collaborative project, DAFNE – Decision Analytic Framework for Food, Water and Energy nexus within the Zambezi Basin continued from the second quarter.
- Characteristaion of selected springs in Zambia: Sources of clean water and medicinal health.
- Wetlands Monitoring and Assessment Service for Transboundary Basins in Southern Africa (WeMAST). Funded by Africa Union Commission. Awarded to SASSCAL Consortium on 10th November, 2017
- Project for Visualisation of Impact of Chronic / Latent Chemical Hazard and Geo-ecological remediation in Zambia, KAMPAI Project. Funded by JICA
- A Sanitation Project on “Characterisation of pit contents and developing a scientific understanding of processes occurring in onsite dry pit latrines systems in low income urban areas in Zambia”. Funds secured from Water Resources Commission (WRC) of South Africa as a sub-contractor of the WRC for the Belinda and Bill Gates Foundation Grant Project.
Geology
- Geological Mapping in northern Zambia lakes area of oil exploration Block 31.
